International Power is a global leader in independent power generation with 72,360MW (gross) in operation and a significant pipeline of 15,503MW (gross) projects under construction worldwide. The Company was formed in February 2011 by the combination of International Power Company (U.K.) and GDF SUEZ (France), consolidating the international leadership of GDF SUEZ in the global utilities sector. GDF SUEZ owns 70% of International Power’s issued share capital, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange.
In the Middle East, Turkey & Africa region (META), International Power has a direct equity interest in more than 26 GW power capacity and almost 4.7 million m³/day of desalination capacity in operation and under construction. In the GCC, it is the leading operating independent power and desalinated water producer, with over 15 years of experience. Recent bid successes resulted in five projects under construction and one in exclusive negotiations.
In Turkey, International Power has two plants in operation with a total capacity of 1.2 GW, and runs a natural gas distribution and retail company, IZGAZ, with over 200,000 subscribers east of Istanbul.
In Africa, International Power has been awarded three new development projects: in Morocco, Tarfaya is expected to add 300 MW of wind power, and Safi over 1,200 MW of supercritical coal power to META’s portfolio, while in South Africa two Greenfield OCGT facilities should add another 1,027 MW.
